WHEN THE BRIGHT GOD OF DAY, by WILLIAM MONLAS Last Line: If you rashly approach near the sound. Subject(s): Goddesses & Gods; Love; Mythology | ||||||||
WHEN the bright god of day Drove westward his ray, And the evening was charming and clear, The swallows amain Nimbly skim o'er the plain, And our shadows like giants appear. In a jessamine bower, When the bean was in flower, And Zephyrs breathed odours around, Loved Celia was set, With her song and spinet, And she charmed all the grove with the sound. 'Rosy bowers,' she sung, While the harmony rung, And the birds they all fluttering arrive; The industrious bees, From the flowers and trees, Gently hum with their sweets to their hive. The gay god of love, As he flew o'er the grove, By Zephyrs conducted along; As she touched on the strings, He beat time with his wings, And Echo repeated the song. O you mortals! beware How you venture too near, Love doubly is armèd to wound: Your fate you can't shun, For you're surely undone, If you rashly approach near the sound. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BEDTIME READING FOR THE UNBORN CHILD by KHALED MATTAWA EAST OF CARTHAGE: AN IDYLL by KHALED MATTAWA SEVEN TWILIGHTS: 7 by CONRAD AIKEN VICARIOUS ATONEMENT by RICHARD ALDINGTON NOTHING ABOUT THE MOMENT by LUCILLE CLIFTON VENUS IN A GARDEN by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON AN OFFERING FOR TARA by GARY SNYDER DEAR ELIZABETH: (FOR ELIZABETH DIFIORE) by KAREN SWENSON |
