SHE heard the summonsand she needs must go! Shall we who knew her grieve her passing? No! For she went not as goes protesting Youth Who is not done with questing after truth Who has but known the blossoming of Spring, Has only dreamed what harvest time may bring. Nor did she go as Age, who seeks release From all life's burdensasking only peace. She had not felt the chill of Age's snow Only its golden harvest did she know And, as a harvester, when day is done, Turns him home gladly with the setting sun Bearing rich sheaves, filled with the deep content That full achievement brings, so, too, she went! So would we all goafter harvesting, Untouched by Winter, still remembering Spring! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND A DESERTED HOUSE by ROSELLE MERCIER MONTGOMERY |
