LIFE, I AM YOURS, by                     Poet's Biography

Last Line: For I am yours, life, and shall ever be!
Subject(s): Life

LIFE, I am yours, and I shall ever be!
Death comes to woo me, swaggering and bold,
But he will find no faithfulness in me,
And though he win me—yet he cannot hold!

I cannot think I shall unheeding lie,
And stir not at the summoning of Spring;
My heart will tremble when young May goes by,
My dust will burgeon to her blossoming.

Though Death, who is so used to constancy,
Will never dream that I can be untrue,
Oh, I shall hear you calling, calling me,
And find a way, Life, to come back to you!

I shall go with the mounting sap that goes
To be the lifeblood of some towering tree;
Or, when the west wind whispers to the rose,
I shall be there—it will be whispering me!

No, Death will find no constancy in me—
For I am yours, Life, and shall ever be!
