WILD PROPHECY, by ANGELA MORGAN Poet's Biography First Line: Hear me, lords of the upper air Last Line: Love tells me it will not be long! Subject(s): Prophecy & Prophets | ||||||||
Hear me, Lords of the upper air, Cloudy keepers of time and space, You who hold in your broad embrace The peace of God and the world's despair; You whose windy halls lie far And firm upon the ether's edge, Whose towers lift from heaven's ledge, Whose doors have neither lock nor bar; Hearken, masters, for I would tell Of a vagrant whisper, an eerie sound Fleet as mercury on the ground -- Syllables I could scarcely spell. Heed me and help me, Lords, I pray, For a voice has come to my waking ear, A splintering cry so swift, so near, It has brought the stars to my floor today. It has pierced the marrow and bone of me, And whither it went or whence it came The blood in my body has turned to flame While my heart beats time to a prophecy. To a prophecy both wild and fair Of that bold hour when farthest space Shall yield its code to the human race -- Our Moment linked with the Afterwhere. Oh, marvel of the astonished morn! Oh, signal out of the stratosphere When she whose name I hold most dear -- From whose brave body I was born -- Shall summon me from that blue height, Shall call my name, release my load, Her beacon white upon the road, Flooding the darkened path with light! Hear me, kings of the upper air, Lordly keepers of time and tide; Your star-stitched banners, blowing wide, Spell courage when your children dare! My vow is lightning-swift and strong; My pledge is hot upon the wind; New knowledge leaps within my mind -- Love tells me it will not be long! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEDITATION ON SAVIORS by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE PROPHET by LUCILLE CLIFTON THREE SONNETS by RICHARD WILBUR MERLIN'S PROPHESY by WILLIAM BLAKE SPELT FROM SIBYL'S LEAVES by GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS THE NEW EZEKIEL by EMMA LAZARUS A WORM FED ON THE HEART OF CORINTH by ISAAC ROSENBERG SARAH'S CHOICE by ELEANOR WILNER A FRAGMENT FROM THE AGAMEMNON OF AESCHYLOS by AESCHYLUS |
