TO THE BLUE, HIGH MOUNTAIN, by REBECCA EMERY MORTON First Line: The japanese have fujiyama, we Last Line: White-capped above a sea of amethyst! Subject(s): Mountains; Pikes Peak, Colorado; Hills; Downs (great Britain) | ||||||||
The Japanese have Fujiyama, we Have you in snow-clad majesty; Remote, you are unceasingly Uplifted for our sight against the blue Of Colorado sky's most vivid hue. Changeless you stand, the same yet not the same From morning's dawn to evening's painted flame, Lovely and lonely, deaf to our acclaim; All lights and shadows play along your crest, Changing your face, though you remain at rest. Now lapis lazuli in clear moonglow Your beauty to your worshippers may show Purpling to darkness where the slope dips low; Aquamarine the heavens o'er your head Are breathless wonder for the rapt gaze spread. Or gloomily above our homesteads warm Dark blue you brood in shadowed time of storm, Etched sharp with snow to outline your clear form; And yet, oh dreamlike peak, we love you best In common garb of snow and sunshine dressed: Fair in the early light your slopes seem brown, Darkling and rich beneath your snowy crown, Changing to blue as the high sun slips down, Plunging in splendor to its nightly tryst, And leaves you veiled in filmy clouds of mist, White-capped above a sea of amethyst! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOUNTAIN FASTNESS by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREEN MOUNTAIN IDYL by HAYDEN CARRUTH IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOU by HAYDEN CARRUTH SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: ALONZO CHURCHILL by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
