POEM, by ALICE MOSER First Line: The memory of a flamelike shadow Last Line: Recalling a forgotten vow. Subject(s): Life; Time | ||||||||
The memory of a flamelike shadow Smoulders through the feeble wall Today had built to shut it out. See the crisping papers fall! Music, chastened, holds its mouth; That traitor I had languished o'er. Its frozen grace is silenced now By red lips I have kissed before; Remembrance is more tangible Than hours fitted in the scheme That formulates my present day, And music's frailer than a dream. I have held life close to me. Breast to breast, I felt her breath Warm beneath my fervid mouth. Miraculously living Death, Warden of these tedious days, You cannot hope to win me now; A shadow comes to me and speaks, Recalling a forgotten vow. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND ONE WHO'S LEARNED by ALICE MOSER |
