Lord, I will dress Thy shrine with garlands gay, And light the candles gleaming tall and white Against the altar. Ere the Christmas Night Shall pass, because, dear Lord, a boon I pray. I ask a heart serene, at peace with Thee And all Thy children dwelling on the earth; I ask for friendships that will prove their worth As years roll on; for love as full and free As was Thine own; and then, dear Lord, I make A plea for lesser gifts, for home and health, Glad days and goodly store of earthly wealth To share with others, for Thy dear name's sake. This is my Christmas prayer for the New Year. For those whom Thou and I, dear Lord, hold dear. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 23 by JAMES JOYCE |
