SILENCE, by MAUDE DE VERSE NEWTON First Line: I who only knew Last Line: Did I know utter, tideless hush. Subject(s): Silence | ||||||||
I who only knew The canyons men contrive By rearing walls of stone and brick, Where human bees in cities hive -- I who knew the skies That daylight wore or dark Above the turrets of a town, Or neatly ordered city park -- I had quiet known, Or thought it silence when The roaring of my canyons ceased, Deserted for the night by men. Silence? I was wrong; Not till I climbed the heights Of barren, tilting mountain slopes, Where eagles wing their soundless flights -- Not until I saw A mountain-dawn at blush, Where hoary, watching peaks looked forth Did I know utter, tideless hush. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A SONG OF SILENCE by LOUISA SARAH BEVINGTON TANKA DIARY (9) by HARRYETTE MULLEN 7 A.M., A MAN AND A WOMAN by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR |
