If I had been thy mother, Holy Child, Could I have borne thy glory as the mild Sweet Mary did? Would I have felt no sudden fear Beholding wise men from the far east kneeling near Thy lowly manger bed? Those sages great Who counselled kings in grave affairs of state -- Ah, what had they to do with thee, my little son? Why proffered they rare jewels to my dearest one? Would I have craved no homage due to me When humble shepherds, prostrate, worshipped thee, Because I was thy mother? Would the angels' song Have made my faith, like Mary's, firm and strong, While purpose high gained from their prophecy Clothed all my dreams of thy futurity? Ah then, at last, could love like mine, grown reconciled, Have given thee as Mary gave? ...
