BLESSED PERMANENCE OF HILLS, by EDITH OGDEN First Line: I could not live where there is not a hill Last Line: A panacea for littleness that kills. Subject(s): Mountains; Hills; Downs (great Britain) | ||||||||
I could not live where there is not a hill, Some mountain height to which to lift my eyes For comfort, for the guidance there which flies Straight to a weary heart, earth-winded, ill With little troubles; taken singly, nil. But who can singly take persistent lies, The daily aggravations, whens and whys, And doubts which constantly depress the will? Great troubles bring with them a courage greater, Full compensation, gift from our Creator. Only -- to ease the mind from fancied taunts, Regarding every needleprick which haunts The heart -- God made the permanence of hills, A panacea for littleness that kills. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOUNTAIN FASTNESS by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREEN MOUNTAIN IDYL by HAYDEN CARRUTH IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOU by HAYDEN CARRUTH UNDER A PATCHED SAIL by MARIANNE MOORE IT'S A QUEER TIME by ROBERT RANKE GRAVES AT FREDERICKSBURG [DECEMBER 13, 1862] by JOHN BOYLE O'REILLY |
