THE WAY OF KNOWLEDGE, by PARMENIDES Poet's Biography First Line: Far as the utmost reach of heart's desire Last Line: Avenging justice holds the double key. Subject(s): Knowledge | ||||||||
FAR as the utmost reach of heart's desire They sped my chariot, these that draw me now, And set me on that roadway known to fame, -- Way of the Goddess, leading by one route Through every city, -- if a man but know. Borne wisely onward by the straining pair That road I took: and Maidens led the way. Then piped the burning axle loud and shrill, Spun in the sockets by the racing wheels At either end revolving: such our haste When Daughters of the Sun from Night's abode Coveyed me, leading on towards the light, And plucked from off their heads the veils obscure. There stands the gate whereby both Night and Day Their paths determine; high as heaven it rises, With lintelled top and threshold built of stone, A bolted portal blocked by mighty doors. Avenging Justice holds the double key. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOW DO YOU KNOW? by EVE MERRIAM ENLIGHTENMENT by JOSEPHINE MILES PHYSIOLOGUS by JOSEPHINE MILES A COLLEGELANDS CATECHISM by PAUL MULDOON THE BEAR AND THE MAN by ROBERT BLY A PARIS BLACKBIRD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR THE LIGHT THAT CAME TO LUCILLE CLIFTON by LUCILLE CLIFTON THE CLOUDS OF MAGELLAN (APHORISMS OF MR.
