THEREFORE FIGHT, by HELEN PHILBROOK PATTEN First Line: Lo, I would seek to be alone with peace Last Line: And only these, can lead to final glory. Subject(s): Jesus Christ; Life; Peace; Soul | ||||||||
Lo, I would seek to be alone with peace -- Withdraw from the world's pride and lusts and fears Into a place of silence where curses have no place And wickedness cannot torment my soul. And there, in safe retreat, would I look out Upon the mass of misery and hate, Knowing that I am safe, untouched By vicious passions that may wreck a world. And yet my heart revolts at this, a coward's ease, And asks: "What means this life? Why am I here But to accept my part, to train my soul and try To help in brother's combat with sin's toils? Even Christ himself came from the Father's peace To share the struggles of a wayward race, And teach poor human hearts that bonds of love, And only these, can lead to final glory. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE CRUEL FALCON by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE WHOLE SOUL by PHILIP LEVINE I KNOW MY SOUL by CLAUDE MCKAY HONORING THE SAND; IN MEMORY OF JOSEPH CAMPBELL by ROBERT BLY THE CHINESE PEAKS; FOR DONALD HALL by ROBERT BLY THE LIFE OF TOWNS: TOWN OF THE EXHUMATION by ANNE CARSON THE SYMPHONY by HELEN PHILBROOK PATTEN |
