ROMANTICISM IN DEFENSE, by MARGARET E. PECK First Line: The stars look down - the laughing silent stars Last Line: Some fools with minds both nebulous and sweet. Subject(s): Stars | ||||||||
The stars look down -- the laughing silent stars, Great galaxies above a meagre earth -- On smoke and steel, on exit and on birth, On mortal destinies, on floods, and wars. The stars look down on men grown worldly-wise Who know the rose's blight, the fruit's decay, The clock-like swift rotation marking day, On tired men with grim discerning eyes. The stars look down, but few look to the stars For fear their searching eyes can only show A bold defiance, ending in defeat; Their sand-built castles crumble as they go, But still, there must be some to laugh with Mars, Some fools with minds both nebulous and sweet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EPIC STARS by ROBINSON JEFFERS HYMN TO THE STARS by GEORGE LAWRENCE ANDREWS CHRISTMAS TREE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS CLEMATIS MONTANA by MADELINE DEFREES THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE by JAMES GALVIN TO SEE THE STARS IN DAYLIGHT by JAMES GALVIN PARASITICS: TO CERTAIN POETS by CONRAD AIKEN WRITTEN AFTER SWIMMING FROM SESTOS TO ABYDOS by GEORGE GORDON BYRON ON A VIRTUOUS YOUNG GENTLEWOMAN THAT DIED SUDDENLY by WILLIAM CARTWRIGHT |
