How quietly she sleeps. The tears have all been shed -- No distilled drops of loneliness do sting her lids tonight. No quivering, rebuffed pleading distorts her lips so pale. No aching self-reproach for bitter thoughts, No anguished yearning for fading dreams torments her heart. She sleeps tonight. And softly in the cool darkness A vagrant breeze stirs the flowers on a new-made grave -- Not hers. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
