CONCEPTION, by GRACE PHILLIPS First Line: God's need for beauty must have been immense Last Line: Straight from the sky, straight from the throats of birds! Subject(s): God | ||||||||
God's need for beauty must have been immense Because he made the world so beautiful. His need for love a passion so intense No man escapes its influential pull. His soul and song, I think, are synonyms; That dirge we hear along the ocean's shore Is God's voice weeping mighty requiems To beauties that are lost forevermore. The exultation that we feel in spring, The sweet deliciousness of yielding ground, As though God walked before us, reckoning -- He seems to pause and listen to the sound Of earth renewing -- then we hear his words Straight from the sky, straight from the throats of birds! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE MOUNTAIN IS STRIPPED by DAVID IGNATOW AS CLOSE AS BREATHING by MARK JARMAN UNHOLY SONNET 1 by MARK JARMAN UNHOLY SONNET 13 by MARK JARMAN BIRTH-DUES by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE SILENT SHEPHERDS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS MERELY STATEMENT by AMY LOWELL |
