CONCEPTION, by
First Line: God's need for beauty must have been immense
Last Line: Straight from the sky, straight from the throats of birds!
Subject(s): God

God's need for beauty must have been immense
Because he made the world so beautiful.
His need for love a passion so intense
No man escapes its influential pull.
His soul and song, I think, are synonyms;
That dirge we hear along the ocean's shore
Is God's voice weeping mighty requiems
To beauties that are lost forevermore.
The exultation that we feel in spring,
The sweet deliciousness of yielding ground,
As though God walked before us, reckoning --
He seems to pause and listen to the sound
Of earth renewing -- then we hear his words
Straight from the sky, straight from the throats of birds!
