CONVOCATION AT EVENING, by MABEL POSEGATE First Line: The vividness of the redbud is fading Last Line: Of the shadows, the apple snow, an obvious nest and a first star. Subject(s): Evening; Sunset; Twilight | |||
The vividness of the redbud is fading And the delicate terminal leaves appear as green hearts. The apple tree drops thin snow, Fragrant snow, until the heart aches With the bewildering passion of the Spring. The foot presses the purple flowering ivy Releasing an aroma that arises and fastens upon the senses. It stabs the unresisting mind And a thousand memories reply. The ghosts of pallid days return from a shadowy past. Now a squirrel runs along the oak bough, Stitching graceful scallops as he goes. Mauve shadows are beginning to strike the young vine With its coral-edged emerald leaf -- Early promise of lusciousness and bees. These will soon blanket four open mouths in the crotch of of the peach That wait for wriggling prey from the loam. No pain of the observer has power to hinder or defer This quiet convocation at evening Of the shadows, the apple snow, an obvious nest and a first star. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOURNEY INTO THE EYE by DAVID LEHMAN FEBRUARY EVENING IN NEW YORK by DENISE LEVERTOV THE HOUSE OF DUST: 1 by CONRAD AIKEN TWILIGHT COMES by HAYDEN CARRUTH IN THE EVENINGS by LUCILLE CLIFTON NINETEEN FORTY by NORMAN DUBIE BOY BENEATH THE STARS by MABEL POSEGATE |
