THE BOAST OF THE SILVER DRESS, by PEGGY WILLIAMS POWERS First Line: The silver dress was speaking low Last Line: "I cover her heart. I know." Subject(s): Clothing & Dress | ||||||||
The silver dress was speaking low, Its voice was melancholy, proud: "The other dresses come and go, But I'm the chosen of the crowd: Our lady died in me last night." A slipper answered, angry, cool: "You speak the words of a dismal fool; She has never danced so fast or light As she danced when she danced in me last night." The tiara spoke in a haughty way: "Her head was high, her voice was gay; Did you not hear her laughter ring, 'The king is dead, long live the king,' When someone spoke of love last night?" "The others go, but I will stay." (The silver dress was speaking low.) "She died in me last night, I say; I cover her heart. I know." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...DRESSING MY DAUGHTERS by MARK JARMAN IT'S HARD TO KEEP A CLEAN SHIRT CLEAN by JUNE JORDAN ODE TO A DRESSMAKER'S DUMMY by DONALD JUSTICE THE RED SHIRT by PHILIP LEVINE THE THINGS IN BLACK MEN?ÇÖS CLOSETS by E.
