LAMENT, by ELLA E. PRESTON First Line: David, the kindly clod has stopped your ears Last Line: And night has more of glory it shall teach! Subject(s): Lament | ||||||||
David, the kindly clod has stopped your ears Long since. You need not know the fallacies Your sweet lips framed, nor hang 'neath drooping trees Your harp, nor be distraught by cosmic fears. Jehovah, in His firmament, long years Ago displayed his handiwork to ease Your anxious heart. 'Twas he bade men to seize Hope from a radiant bow, and dry their tears. Jehovah Lord is dead! So dreams must die Which are too fair from mathematic plan! Dynamics claim the greedy mind of man -- Frail, transient man, whose hour is passing by. Yet day to day has never ceased its speech And night has more of glory it shall teach! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEGY ASKING THAT IT BE THE LAST; FOR INGRID ERHARDT, 1951-1971 by NORMAN DUBIE ELEGY FOR WRIGHT & HUGO by NORMAN DUBIE ELEGY TO THE PULLEY OF SUPERIOR OBLIQUE by NORMAN DUBIE THE ELEGY FOR INTEGRAL DOMAINS by NORMAN DUBIE BRAVURA LAMENT by DANIEL HALPERN THE UNPEOPLED, CONVENTIONAL ROSE-GARDEN' by KENNETH REXROTH BETWEEN TWO WARS by KENNETH REXROTH CHAMBER MUSIC: 24 by JAMES JOYCE |
