LED AND RULED?, by EDNA DEAN PROCTOR Poet's Biography First Line: English led and english ruled'! Last Line: That herald peace, outshining mars! Alternate Author Name(s): Dean Subject(s): England; Leadership; United States; English; America | |||
'ENGLISH led and English ruled'! Ambassador! where were you schooled That you thus misrepresent us Wake us with a thrill portentous? Was our immortal 'Declaration' Fashioned by the English nation? Was England gracious helper when Our Lincoln made of chattels men? Have we subdued both land and sea At her imperial decree? Go to! nor fief nor liege are we! England we duly honor; yet To other airs our songs are set To other heights our eagle flies. God guide us in our great emprise To hold for aye in freedom's van The bright West consecrate to Man! The lion, England's; ours the stars That herald peace, outshining Mars! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS WATCH THE LIGHTS FADE by ROBINSON JEFFERS AFTER TENNYSON by AMBROSE BIERCE MEETING YOU AT THE PIERS by KENNETH KOCH INVOCATION TO THE SOCIAL MUSE by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH COLUMBUS DYING [MAY 20, 1506] by EDNA DEAN PROCTOR SA-CA-GA-WE-A; THE INDIAN GIRL WHO GUIDED LEWIS AND CLARK by EDNA DEAN PROCTOR |
