When friends shall lay me gently down Beneath the sheltering clay, I hope the joyous birds will sing In hedges by the way. I hope the sun will brightly shine And lovely buds unfold, The day my soul shall pass within Those gates of pearl and gold. I hope no friend will pause to weep Beside my narrow bed, Because my heart that loved them so To brighter realms has fled. And if dear hands should lay bright flowers Above my quiet breast, Remembering their love for me, How sweetly would I rest. I still shall love you fond and true, Though I shall give no sign, And waving grasses spread between Your faces dear, and mine. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
