Subject(s): Sonnet (as Literary Form); Women - Heroes

Jane Hooper lived and died on Hollow Street
Which wound the barren hill below the town.
The vines long held her house from tumbling down
And served as arms to shield her loved retreat
Whose tax sometimes she worked in vain to meet.
She did not seem to mind her patched old gown,
Her meager fare or hands, work-worn and brown,
For sharing somehow made her life complete.
That some men's soil was rich and hers was clay
She did not envy -- nor their greater space.
Though scant her bin she gave with simple trust
And when she died a foreclosed mortgage lay
Nearby with empty purse, though on her face
Still gently shone the love that shared her crust.
