BALANCE, by
First Line: Unrest and doubt, the backlash of despair
Last Line: Is our share of infinity smaller than these?

Unrest and doubt, the backlash of despair
Like Furies of old with serpents for hair,
Spawn strife and corruption, malice and dread
From which lesser evils are ceaselessly bred.
Why must we partake of war's grim arrears
With its dark companions, sorrow and tears?
Life forces need balance in purpose and power
And only by faith can we enter Truth's tower.

Sometimes we need silence, persistent and long
To show us the motif, insistent and strong.

Remember the hills still lift their proud crests
And rivers still mirror trees on their breasts;
Green are the slopes and the valley below
While birds give forth song in melodious flow;
The seasons eternal, the wind and the rains --
Why measure life's values by small doubts and pains?
Look up to the heavens and pierce the deep blue
That challenges all that is deepest in you.

The brooks and the streams still run to the seas;
Is our share of infinity smaller than these?
