TO THE NEW OWNER, by LUCILE HARGROVE REYNOLDS First Line: Here is the house, in readiness for you Last Line: Hoping to find a mislaid dream somewhere! Subject(s): Houses | ||||||||
Here is the house, in readiness for you; Empty, as far as any eye can see, But I must warn you that there lingers here Some ineradicable part of me. My heart was keen to every grace of it, Prideful of seasoned strength in beam and rafter -- My house! to guard against unloveliness, To make of it a citadel of laughter. May your own tenancy be bright as mine, Who crossed the threshold in strong tender arms, Unknowing one small rooftree could afford, For two, such sanctuary from alarms. So, if you hear a small, thin sound at dusk, A rustle as of someone on the stair, Please do not stir -- it will be likely I, Hoping to find a mislaid dream somewhere! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TWO-RIVER LEDGER by KHALED MATTAWA SEVEN TWILIGHTS: 3 by CONRAD AIKEN FOR THE REBUILDING OF A HOUSE by WENDELL BERRY JERONIMO'S HOUSE by ELIZABETH BISHOP MENDING THE ADOBE by HAYDEN CARRUTH MY HUT; AFTER TRAN QUANG KHAI by HAYDEN CARRUTH ARMORED by LUCILE HARGROVE REYNOLDS |
