A great Greek sculptor, was Praxiteles. Yet legend tells us that there was a day, Wishing a cup unspelled with traceries, His fancy found no form that it could sway. When twilight brought the respite of soft ease Upon a breast fair-moulded of love's clay, At once he knew: this curve! this contour! these Liquid lines! The live cup before him lay. The woman whose bosom held such beauty pressed Perfection took its form upon her breast This mortal goddesswho can tell her name? No one. But through a sculptor's ardent flame The cup has held for us the form she bore, And beauty dwells upon it evermore. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI |
