INVOCATION, by JANE RICHTER First Line: Swiftly dispose of all this web of youth Last Line: Bitter wind mocks the precepts of the old. | ||||||||
"Swiftly dispose of all this web of youth That weaves you to an iridescent past; These letters, books are not the present truth But only thin laments for things once fast. Cleanly emerge from the cracked chrysalis Of vanished personalities, and stand Knowing not what was, conscious of what is, Fearful and naked in an adult land." In vain do I invoke the trembling heart. Too well it knows the dark and blinding fear That in this ordered world I have no part, In spite of life am still an alien here. I strip myself of youth but now a cold Bitter wind mocks the precepts of the old. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TO W.P.: 3 by GEORGE SANTAYANA THE MENTAL TRAVELLER by WILLIAM BLAKE SONNET OF HIS LADY IN HEAVEN by JACOPO DA LENTINO A TERRIBLE INFANT by FREDERICK LOCKER-LAMPSON EMBLEMS OF LOVE: 4.
