MY LIFE, by JOHAN LUDVIG RUNEBERG Poet's Biography First Line: Struggling o'er an open grave Last Line: Far as ever from his gaze! Alternate Author Name(s): Runeberg, J. L. | ||||||||
STRUGGLING o'er an open grave. Sailing o'er an angry wave, Toiling on with aimless aim, Oh, my life, I name thy name! Longing fills the sailor's soul, Seas before his eyesight roll, -- "Lo, behind yon purple haze Higher sights shall meet my gaze. "I shall near a better strand, Light and freedom's happy land." -- Swelled the sail, expectance laughed, Towards the boundless sped the craft. Struggling o'er an open grave, Sailing o'er an angry wave, Toiling on with aimless aim -- O my life, I name thy name! Ah, the haven calm and clear, Peace of heart in bygone year, Hope's gold coast, ah! hidden spot, Never reached, and ne'er forgot! Billows cheek the sailor's course, Overhead the tempest hoarse: Still is yonder purple haze Far as ever from his gaze! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ENSIGN STAL by JOHAN LUDVIG RUNEBERG IDYLL by JOHAN LUDVIG RUNEBERG THE OLD MAN'S RETURN by JOHAN LUDVIG RUNEBERG THE SWAN by JOHAN LUDVIG RUNEBERG THE VILLAGE GIRL, FROM FANRIK STALS SAGNER by JOHAN LUDVIG RUNEBERG THE WORK-GIRL by JOHAN LUDVIG RUNEBERG SENRYU: BLIND DATE by TIMOTHY LIU GUILIELMUS REX by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH 1914: 5.
