SETTLED WORLD, by EDITH SAYER First Line: The sleepy sun gives one last noiseless yawn Last Line: Save me. -- I do not sleep. -- I do not sleep. Subject(s): Sleep | ||||||||
The sleepy sun gives one last noiseless yawn, And, stretching, slides into his cloudy bed And draws his rainbow quilts about his head And disappears until tomorrow's dawn. A slight nocturnal wind now lingers on And murmurs lullabies to lure to bed All creatures. It's a settled world, instead, Of twilight. . . . Now all light and life have gone. The Watchman swings His light far out in space For lynx-eyed ones the time of night to tell -- But all the world is lost in slumber deep, As darkness creeps along with endless pace And none can hear Him whisper, "All is well!" Save me. -- I do not sleep. -- I do not sleep. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...YOU'S SWEET TO YO' MAMMY JES DE SAME by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON CHAMBER MUSIC: 3 by JAMES JOYCE CHAMBER MUSIC: 22 by JAMES JOYCE CHAMBER MUSIC: 34 by JAMES JOYCE GOING TO SLEEP by ELIZABETH AKERS ALLEN THE BLUE NAP by WILLIAM MATTHEWS |
