SONNET FOR THE SUBSTANCE, by
First Line: O, doubtless you'll remember till you die
Last Line: "when you come shouting late, ""when do we eat?"
Subject(s): Memory

O, doubtless you'll remember till you die
The way her bronze curls burned against the white
Pure oval of her flower face; and I
Have not one gift that's beautiful to fight
These memories so close through dark you see,
Pale moonlight staining her sweet body gold,
For having known her not so well as me,
She stays forever young and I grow old.

But that is well and I would wish no harm.
Her cold high sanctuary's safe from me:
For I may hear you swear at the alarm,
And turn to find me warmly close, while she --
I think, again, her memories retreat
When you come shouting late, "When do we eat?"
