When I behold the peace and beauty of
Your spirit, then I think myself of small
Account within this world of despairing love;
Though only deep in woods is peace, yet all
Alone I walked one night in bliss, so lonely
That night into another world, a world
Of silver beauty: Love for you, dear, curled
Around like Tristram's for Isolde only.
Love is not one word and then another,
Love is not turned on and off so readily,
Nor love and life be parted from each other;
Love is like a dawn that rises steadily,
Then sinks back slowly, holding long its flame,
Into the unknown ocean whence it came.
