LYRICS OF LOBOS, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: I heard old lobos storming in the night
Last Line: And upon lobos an eternal awe!
Subject(s): Wolves

I

I heard old Lobos storming in the night
Through all its clefts and caverns; and the sound
Swept from the craggy crests and deeps profound
Up to the stars within the zenith height.

What a mad tumult! Waves with fangs of white
Gnawed at the rocky bases; bound on bound
Leaped up the cliff sides to the lofty ground
Where the gaunt cypress trees defied their might.

I heard old Lobos storming, hurling wide
Its trumpet of defiance to the seas,
Daring them on, and flinging back their roar.
Above in calm looked down the Pleiades:
Above, Orion with majestic stride
Moved on far over that wild line of shore.

II

Who has not looked on Lobos has not seen
Nature in tragic majesty of mien.

Who has not trod on Lobos has not known
The face of Wonder intimately shown.

Who has not stood on Lobos lingeringly
Has never felt the passion of the sea.

Dawn—noon—eve—midnight—the diurnal law;
And upon Lobos an eternal awe!
