WITHIN A DREAMER'S HAND, by VIRGINIA SCOTT First Line: The dreamer wandering down a lonely beach Last Line: Or treads the land that hardy viking found! Alternate Author Name(s): O'neill, Virginia Scott Subject(s): Dreams; Sonnet (as Literary Form); Nightmares | ||||||||
The dreamer wandering down a lonely beach Can scoop the restless world within his hand, Or scatter continents wide through trickling sand That falls no farther than his footsteps reach. For nibbling wave-marauders sacked from each Defenseless curve of sea-adjacent land The microcosmic worlds to form this strand, And countless messengers filled this gaping breach. Perhaps he walks on China's ancient coast -- Or jagged rocks where pinioned mariners screamed -- The shore of Java -- India's sacred ground -- Or peaks Lemuria's mountaineers could boast. Perhaps he stirs the dust where Sappho dreamed Or treads the land that hardy Viking found! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS BALLADE OF A DREAM ADDICT by VIRGINIA SCOTT |
