THE LAST RUN (A RAILROAD BRANCH LINE IS ADANDONED), by
First Line: As I look out in quickly stolen glance
Last Line: The long last run into the silent west.
Subject(s): Railroads; Railways; Trains

As I look out in quickly stolen glance,
Along the right-of-way so long I've known,
I feel a pain that stings me like a lance,
At each familiar house, and field and stone.
Never again to guide my swaying cab,
Never again to hear the rushing sound!
Waking to dread the certain pricking stab
Of long tomorrows spent on alien ground!
Now let the heart forecast the day to come
When waiting eyes and ears are keener still,
And I shall waken to the steady hum
And gleam of rails through unknown field and hill,
The far new land -- so shall I hold it best,
The long last run into the silent west.
