WHY ARE WE HERE, by CAROLINE PARKER SMITH First Line: Why are we here? None has come back to say Last Line: Why are we here? That souls bear fruit each spring. Subject(s): Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
Why are we here? None has come back to say Yet surely not to grumble at our fate. Nor for an instant should we hesitate To render some small kindness day by day. So man must ever work that he may pay Through honesty; and he should meditate But lightly on rewards which come too late. To love and servethis is the only way. Seek not success, nor what success may bring Rather drift outward with the changing tide. Visions on earth shall only be as wide As dreams conceived by what man's soul may sing. Work but for joynot gainput fear aside. Why are we here? That souls bear fruit each spring. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI GRANTCHESTER by CAROLINE PARKER SMITH |
