MEMORIES, by JEAN SMITH First Line: Only just to be at home once more Last Line: Sweet memories that never can be still. Subject(s): Memory | ||||||||
Only just to be at home once more, Just to ease the longing from our hearts, To live again the years that are gone forever; In sadness, one remains and one departs. We see again the dear familiar step-stone; In one's fancy is the brook that brightly gleams. But should we still this longing of our memory, We should have to burn our golden bridge of dreams. The glorious sunset sweeps the distant meadows, The wailing notes of the dear old whippoorwill; As years roll on those memories come more often, Sweet memories that never can be still. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND THE SAME QUESTION by JOHN HOLLANDER FORGET HOW TO REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET by JOHN HOLLANDER ON THAT SIDE by LAWRENCE JOSEPH MEMORY OF A PORCH by DONALD JUSTICE BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE MOUNTAIN FARM by MALCOLM COWLEY |
