IMMORTALITY, by HELEN LOUISE STAPLEFORD First Line: Within the shadows of the church I kneel Last Line: "to share with him, his immortality." Subject(s): Jesus Christ | ||||||||
Within the shadows of the church I kneel, Silent, before the altar rail alone, And gaze upon the dead Christ carved of stone, Striving some sense of hope renewed to feel. My cry, soul worn and desolate, is vain. This torn bruised body hanging from the tree It but the end. Death holds no more for me . . . Life, dreams, -- all end on Calvaries of pain. But lo! the sunlight falls upon the cross. The pale Christ speaks, "Nay, not in death seek peace, Look to those souls who mount to Calvary In life -- and crucified, earth's gold turned dross, Attain that essence of God's soul, nor cease To share with Him, His Immortality." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE GREEN CHRIST by ANDREW HUDGINS MEDITATION ON SAVIORS by ROBINSON JEFFERS COMPANIONSHIP by MALTBIE DAVENPORT BABCOCK TO A WREN ON CALVARY by LARRY LEVIS THE TRANSFIGURATION by EDWIN MUIR SOUNDS OF THE RESURRECTED DEAD MAN'S FOOTSTEPS (#3): 1.
