THE BEYOND, by MYRTILLA FILSON STEWART First Line: To the great beyond we're plunging Last Line: It pays to live true to our god. Subject(s): Duty | ||||||||
To the great beyond we're plunging Through the maddening whirling strife. To the great unknown we're drifting Not counting the value of life; We are idling away the best of our years Seeking pleasures, amusements and plays Enacted by those of our loved ones On the stage of life's golden dreams. We are not counting the cost of our pleasures; We are not keeping life's book so straight That He who records our doings, Can say, "Well done," not too late. I have given you the world and its beauties; I've given you health, and God's speed. So remember in times of God's glories, It's the time to harvest good seed. So take heed, my brother, take heed; There is an accountant who numbers our deeds; Take heed, and let its summaries Outlimit the seed of our sins For it pays, it pays to live upright -- Yes, it pays, beyond question of doubt; For the glories that come at life's sunrise It pays to live true to our God. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEDICINE 2; FOR JOHN MURRAY by CAROLYN KIZER AND THEY OBEY by CARL SANDBURG STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING by ROBERT FROST BY THE RIVERS by SHIRLEY KAUFMAN TO LUCASTA, [ON] GOING TO THE WARS by RICHARD LOVELACE FOR THE UNION DEAD by ROBERT LOWELL MISS KILMANSEGG AND HER PRECIOUS LEG: HER BIRTH by THOMAS HOOD |
