MULIER, by SOLANGE STRONG First Line: A woman's body is but magdalene's Last Line: The penny always lurks between her lips. Subject(s): Bodies; Women | ||||||||
A woman's body is but Magdalene's, Poor caryatid's strait-sheathed in cinctured pleats And sinuate beneath this false constraint; An avatar of things not dead, serene With those unborn; a riddle that repeats Itself perforce, all answerless, attaint With perpetuity. Although there whips Between her temple-bones infinity (Vast relic of a moral deity), The penny always lurks between her lips. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ARISTOTLE TO PHYLLIS by JOHN HOLLANDER A WOMAN'S DELUSION by SUSAN HOWE JULIA TUTWILER STATE PRISON FOR WOMEN by ANDREW HUDGINS THE WOMEN ON CYTHAERON by ROBINSON JEFFERS TOMORROW by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD LADIES FOR DINNER, SAIPAN by KENNETH KOCH GOODBYE TO TOLERANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV |
