MASTERY, by ETHEL RINER SUBLETTE First Line: This is the sea Last Line: I grew from the seed of eternity. Subject(s): Faith; Belief; Creed | ||||||||
This is the sea; I must walk warily; it is too strong for me. Shout as I will, I cannot make its tides lie still. My utmost strength nothing avails Against its resistless flails. I must stand from their path, and let them rage on; In their time they will be gone. I am not the master of the sea; But I know that its end shall be. This is the wind; Its speed has left me behind. Its powerful horses are winged with light, Millions more than my sight. The puny rain of my tears Is lost in the floods of the years. The tempest will die When its own fury has sucked it dry. Then I shall walk on the ravaged lands, And build again with my hands. Let the sea and the tempest have their will; Time is their master still. He watches dark rage and fury ride, Knowing they must fall at his side. Time is the lord of the wind and the wave; Time is even the lord of the grave; But time is not the lord of me; I grew from the seed of eternity. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY |
