ELEGY ON JENNINGS HILL, by MARSHALL SULLAVAN First Line: The snow lies deep on jennings hill Last Line: Upon her crest discounts their hours. Subject(s): Death; Mourning; Dead, The; Bereavement | ||||||||
The snow lies deep on Jennings Hill, The snow lies white, the snow lies cold, And men who sleep on Jennings Hill Now are so meek, who once were bold. Once they who lie here all entombed Arose to battle, knew the strife That meets all mankind thus bewombed Between the brittle walls of life. Once they were mighty; once their deep veins Pulsed with the pressure of proud blood, And empires sprang from nimble brains And love begat a laughing brood. Now they are gone; now these men sleep. Now crosses rise above their graves; And they are still while their wives weep Or pray in darkened churchly naves; For they are still and shattered dust, They are akin to nought but waste, They know no hunger, have no lust, They've reached the goal to which men haste. All peaceful lie; and Jennings Hill Above them rests, above them towers; For all men die; and Jennings Hill Upon her crest discounts their hours. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HUNGERFIELD by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE MOURNER by LOUISE MOREY BOWMAN HECUBA MOURNS by MARILYN NELSON THERE IS NO GOD BUT by AGHA SHAHID ALI IF I COULD MOURN LIKE A MOURNING DOVE by FRANK BIDART AUTUMN SONG by KATHERINE MANSFIELD |
