HASCHISCH, by ARTHUR WILLIAM SYMONS Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: Behind the door, beyond the light Last Line: In that insomnia which is god. Subject(s): Dreams; Nightmares | ||||||||
Behind the door, beyond the light, Who is it waits there in the night? When he has entered he will stand, Imposing with his silent hand Some silent thing upon the night. Behold the image of my fear: O rise not, move not, come not near! That moment, when you turned your face, A demon seemed to leap through space; His gesture strangled me with fear. And yet I am the lord of all, And this brave world magnifical, Veiled in so variable a mist It may be rose or amethyst, Demands me for the lord of all! Who said the world is but a mood In the eternal thought of God? I know it, real though it seem, The phantom of a haschisch dream In that insomnia which is God. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NERVES by ARTHUR WILLIAM SYMONS |
