BONFIRES, by
First Line: You ask me why so sad a look is mine?
Last Line: Will calm the fires forever in my soul.
Subject(s): Fire

You ask me why so sad a look is mine?
I can't explain; you wouldn't understand
The smoldering fires that lie within my heart.
Once they flamed high, like bonfires fed with leaves;
They flamed -- and ever reached for more and more;
But, like the bonfire, finally burned down,
When negligence, like wet leaves, blanket it;
Yet did not die; ah, no, -- and hence the pain.
Some day peace, like the gentle rain from Heav'n,
Will calm the fires forever in my soul.
