BONFIRES, by EDITH HASKELL TAPPAN First Line: You ask me why so sad a look is mine? Last Line: Will calm the fires forever in my soul. Subject(s): Fire | ||||||||
You ask me why so sad a look is mine? I can't explain; you wouldn't understand The smoldering fires that lie within my heart. Once they flamed high, like bonfires fed with leaves; They flamed -- and ever reached for more and more; But, like the bonfire, finally burned down, When negligence, like wet leaves, blanket it; Yet did not die; ah, no, -- and hence the pain. Some day peace, like the gentle rain from Heav'n, Will calm the fires forever in my soul. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WRITTEN TO A YOUNG LADY by MAURICE BARING OUR DRIFTWOOD FIRE by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE NIGHT FIRE by CLAUDE MCKAY WATER, WINTER, FIRE by MARVIN BELL THE LITTLE FIRE IN THE WOODS by HAYDEN CARRUTH SAMSON PREDICTS FROM GAZA THE PHILADELPHIA FIRE by LUCILLE CLIFTON ALADDIN LAMP by MADELINE DEFREES SPIRIT OF BIRD SONGS by EDITH HASKELL TAPPAN |
