BENEATH RED CLAY, by DORA SANDERS THOMPSON First Line: The death-moth hovered over kan-neh-tee Last Line: And god -- in her heart. Subject(s): Funerals; Native Americans; Burials; Indians Of America; American Indians; Indians Of South America | ||||||||
The death-moth hovered over Kan-Neh-Tee; "Bury me beneath red clay;" But some would scatter her ashes to the four winds -- "Bury me beneath red clay." And some would carry her bones to the mountains -- "Bury me beneath red clay." And some would drop her body into mighty waters: "Bury me beneath red clay." So they buried my great-great-grandmother Beneath red clay -- With Princess robes about her shoulders... And God -- in her heart. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE OLD INDIAN by ARTHUR STANLEY BOURINOT SCHOLARLY PROCEDURE by JOSEPHINE MILES ONE LAST DRAW OF THE PIPE by PAUL MULDOON THE INDIANS ON ALCATRAZ by PAUL MULDOON PARAGRAPHS: 9 by HAYDEN CARRUTH THEY ACCUSE ME OF NOT TALKING by HAYDEN CARRUTH AMERICAN INDIAN ART: FORM AND TRADITION by DIANE DI PRIMA |
