YOU SHOULD LISTEN CLOSELY, GOD, by MARTHA A. M. THOMS First Line: How many voices must be echoing in heaven Last Line: "whimpering, ""father, bread!" Subject(s): Voices | ||||||||
How many voices must be echoing in Heaven, God; How many sounds must beat upon your ears! While I hear one man pouring out his fears, The sorrowful chorus of the world is sung to You. While I hear one bell tolling through the quite night, Millions of bells are clamoring on high, Billions of people shouting, "When?" "Where?" "Why?" All day, each day, they scream their frenzied ravings at You. Though the ceaseless noise of my small world seems deafening, A universal din to You is raised; With banging, clanging noise You must be dazed As the whirling wheels of Time rush through the centuries. But You should listen closely, God; You should bend your head, And hear the hungry children Whimpering, "Father, bread!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VOICES OF THE AIR by KATHERINE MANSFIELD FIVE EASY POEMS; FOR ANNE-MARIE ALBIACH: 4 (MEZZA VOICE) by MICHAEL PALMER A SINGING VOICE by KENNETH REXROTH A VOICE FROM THE SWEAT-SHOPS (A HYMN WITH RESPONSES) by LOUIS UNTERMEYER |
