First Line: Inspired, yet human in his aims alone
Last Line: Made the superbest marble-group—of snow!
Subject(s): Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)

INSPIRED, yet human in his aims alone,
Servile to cold eternity he seemed
When seeking to immortalize in stone
Or frescoed walls, the visions he had dreamed;
But more like God, who not for length of time,
But the least part of His perpetual day,
Creates things so precarious, so sublime,
When once in most soul-sumptuous bravery.

So tells tradition—Michael Angelo
Made the superbest marble-group—of snow!
