THE GUIDE, by GRACE ROBERTSON TUTTLE First Line: Oh, you who walk among the sons of men Last Line: "exult, ""god gives new 'venture to our hand!" Subject(s): Faith; Belief; Creed | ||||||||
Oh, you who walk among the sons of men With head bowed down, have of yourself no ken? Are bitter, self-piteous, or are you gripped by pain; Entangled, struggle, yet seems your struggling vain? Have courage! If your freedom you would gain, A watcher, alert, your summons shall unchain. Then to your spirit call, if victory you'd win, That guide you forgot sits vigilant within. Acknowledged, comes forth. You shall see his power Made manifest, victorious in every hour. He knows not defeat; makes of our failures, gain. He mounts on them. He leads us over pain. Oh, man be strong, thus by the spirit led! Go on; if you falter, still lift your head! Fear not! Faint not! Let scorn, self-pity die; With proud humility the world defy! In brave sincerity your battle fight; There is no ease for brave men in world-light. Undaunted your spirit shall lead, e'en at death's command, Exult, "God gives new 'venture to our hand!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY THE OPENING OF THE LILIES by GRACE ROBERTSON TUTTLE CAPPER KAPLINSKI AT THE NORTH SIDE CUE CLUB by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
