YOU left a kiss upon my mouth As a consuming raging drouth, And shut your door, and locked it tight, And left me neighbour to the night. For one small moment I had thought Your lips had whispered "Come!" I ought Never have let my heart stop dead At notions swirling in my head. The night was clean with northern breeze That swished among the village trees, And sped the village dust to be A parched and passionate smell for me.
