A SONNET TO LOVE'S TRANSIENT ROSES, by ARDIS M. WALKER First Line: Night - long I lay amid love's fragrant roses Last Line: Return to haunt my reveries at night? Subject(s): Flowers; Love; Roses | ||||||||
Night-long I lay amid Love's fragrant roses. The scented breath of myriad blossoms bold Caressed my dream-closed eyes with perfumes old As any fallen rose that now reposes Within the dust an ancient shrine encloses. It seemed that in my arms I did enfold The garnered beauty of the years untold. Yet at the dawn I held but faded roses. Ah, Lord, are buds more brief than dreams and dust? Is fragrance transient as the wind that blows? Or will an endless essence of delight Perfume my years and hold in sacred trust Eternal roses? Will my heart's one rose Return to haunt my reveries at night? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WHISPER OF THE ROSE by EDMUND JOHN ARMSTRONG THE WISDOM OF THE ROSE by ELSA BARKER LOVE PLANTED A ROSE by KATHARINE LEE BATES ROSES; A VILANELLE by LOUISA SARAH BEVINGTON THE PAINTER ON SILK by AMY LOWELL VARIATIONS: 17 by CONRAD AIKEN WORDS IN A CERTAIN APPROPRIATE MODE by HAYDEN CARRUTH LIKE ONE WHO WALKS ALONE by ARDIS M.
