Subject(s): Singing & Singers

How sweet to softly-cushioned baby ears
Are lullabies, slow-winged and lingering
As unstirred clouds that float through lazy Spring.
A few years pass and then youth perseveres
Through strident voice to utter songs he hears;
Then time brings love with pulses quickening
To strains caressing, tender, whispering;
Then age ... and songs to comfort waiting years.

Always man lives with song, with rhythms low
And tender made for love and lovers' ways;
Or fast and stirring notes to make hearts strong,
Or music made for dusk when deep clouds blow; --
Man's pulses pound to rhythm; darkest days
Are made endurable always with song.
