TREE PRAYER, by LOUISE HARTLEY WASSELL First Line: Oh god, that man may come to know Last Line: Their vigil till the last long sleep. Subject(s): Prayer; Trees | ||||||||
Oh God, that man may come to know The beauty of the trees that grow With outstretched arms against the sky, Their supplication soaring high. Bound by the blasts of ice and snow They wait unchanged, till winters go, And laughing winds -- from South set free -- Summon the sap to liberty. Wooed by the warmth of vivid day, They wake at spring in green array, Through sunset glow, as dusk draws night, A silhouette -- a prayer -- a sigh. Oh God, that man may come to know The beauty of the trees that grow, Be kind to them, and let them keep Their vigil till the last long sleep. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE PROBLEM OF DESCRIBING TREES by ROBERT HASS THE GREEN CHRIST by ANDREW HUDGINS MIDNIGHT EDEN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN REFLECTION OF THE WOOD by LEONIE ADAMS THE LIFE OF TREES by DORIANNE LAUX THE BLACK MONKEY by KATHERINE MANSFIELD COUNTRY SCHOOLROOM, ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS by LOUIS UNTERMEYER |
