NOT BY BREAD ALONE, by JAMES TERRY WHITE Poet's Biography First Line: If thou of fortune be bereft Last Line: Can satisfy the soul's desire. Subject(s): Religion; Theology | ||||||||
If thou of fortune be bereft, And thou dost find but two loaves left To theesell one, and with the dole Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul. But not alone does beauty bide Where bloom and tint and fragrance hide; The minstrel's melody may feed Perhaps a more insistent need. But even beauty, howe'er blent To ear and eye, fails to content; Only the heart, with love afire, Can satisfy the soul's desire. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY CONSUMMATION by JAMES TERRY WHITE |
